Grading, Land Clearing & Site Work in Morganton

Platinum Construction & Crane works throughout Morganton and the surrounding Burke County area β€” about 30 minutes west on I-40. Building pads and site development on the growing north side, retaining walls on the sloped lots toward NC-181, and commercial site work along the I-40 corridor. We're an owner-operated crew, which in practice means the person who prices your job in Morganton is the same person running the machine when work starts.

What the Ground Is Like in Morganton

Morganton is where the Foothills start turning into mountains. North of town toward NC-181 and Lake James the grade gets serious and rock is close to the surface; south toward Salem it flattens into better dirt. Two very different jobs depending on which side of town you're on.

This is the part that separates a job that holds up from one that has to be redone. A quote written off a satellite photo misses shallow rock, a high water table, or the direction water actually leaves a Morganton lot. We walk every job here before we price it, so the number you sign is the number you pay β€” and so nobody discovers a ledge halfway through a footing dig.

Getting Around Morganton

We reach most of Morganton by I-40 (exits 103, 104, 105), US-64 and US-70, and we plan equipment access before the trailer rolls. That matters more than people expect: a lowboy that fits the highway does not automatically fit a narrow drive or a tight lot near the Historic Burke County Courthouse. Areas we work regularly include West Morganton, Salem, Enola and the NC-181 corridor toward the lake.

Being genuinely local also decides response time. When a storm drops trees across a drive in Morganton, we are not dispatching from another region or waiting on a rental machine β€” we own our iron and we are about 30 minutes west on I-40.

Permits and Local Requirements in Morganton

City of Morganton Development & Design inside city limits, Burke County Building & Development outside. Lake James-area parcels bring watershed rules into play.

We handle that process as part of the job rather than handing you a phone number, and we tell you up front if your project triggers a review that affects the schedule. Finding out about a land-disturbance threshold after the machines arrive is how a Morganton project loses two weeks.

What We Do Most in Morganton

Site development, retaining walls, grading, and excavation make up the bulk of our Morganton work, though we handle all eight of our services here β€” grading and excavation, land clearing, concrete, demolition, retaining walls, emergency and storm cleanup, site development, and crane service. One owner-run crew for the whole site means no coordinating between three contractors and nobody to point fingers at when something settles.

Landmarks and areas we work near regularly around Morganton: the Historic Burke County Courthouse, Catawba Meadows Park, Freedom High School, the CoMMA performing arts center and Table Rock and Lake James to the north. Whether it's a single driveway or a full site package, every Morganton job gets a free on-site estimate and an honest written price.

About Morganton

A Little About Morganton

Morganton was chartered April 19, 1784 as Morgansborough, named for General Daniel Morgan, the Revolutionary War commander who led Continental troops at Cowpens and Kings Mountain. Morganton was the first town chartered in western North Carolina. The settlement was originally known as Alder Springs; in April 1784 the General Assembly created the Morgan Judicial District and renamed it Morgansborough, laying out acre lots, streets, a courthouse and a jail. The name was shortened to Morganton the same year.

Landmarks and historic sites around town include the Historic Burke County Courthouse, the North Carolina School for the Deaf, the History Museum of Burke County, and the CoMMA performing arts center. Gold was discovered in the south mountains district of burke and mcdowell counties around 1828, part of the carolina gold rush that made north carolina the nation's leading gold producer before california.

Why Local History Matters on a Job Site

That history is not trivia when you are moving dirt. Older communities like Morganton come with things you only find by looking: abandoned foundations, filled-in wells, buried fuel tanks, field tile, farm dumps, and utility lines that predate any accurate record. Mill towns and rail towns in particular tend to hide old footings and slag fill under what looks like ordinary ground. We plan for that on every Morganton job rather than discovering it with a bucket.

The local economy shapes the work too. Around Morganton that means regional healthcare, manufacturing, and tourism anchored by Lake James, Table Rock, and South Mountains State Park β€” which determines whether a given week looks like residential driveways and lot prep or commercial pads and parking. We handle both, with the same crew and the same written price.

Morganton is really two job sites. North toward NC-181 the ground steepens and rock comes up shallow; south around Salem it flattens into workable dirt. Which half of town you are on changes the price and the method.
